ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf have expressed grief and sorrow over the demise of Prof. Ghafoor Ahmed, Naib Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami.
“Prof. Ghafoor Ahmed was an outstanding scholar and a political worker who remained steadfast in his convictions. In politics, he followed the norms of decency,” the President said in his message.
In their messages of condolence, the leaders paid tributes to the services of Prof. Ghafoor Ahmed for the people and the country, and prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant strength to the members of the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss with equanimity.
Prof.Ghafoor was born on June 26, 1927 at Bareli, India. He joined the JI in 1950. He was elected as a member of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation in 1958. He was elected a Member of National Assembly in 1970 and 1977 from Karachi.
He served as Secretary General of Pakistan National Alliance (PNA) in 1977-78, also member of the PNA team that undertook crucial negotiations with the then Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
Prof Ghafoor Ahmed served as federal minister for Industries during 1978-79. He served as JI secretary general from 1988-90.
The JI leader is survived by three sons and six daughters. -- CNBC Pakistan
